Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy staged the final event of the RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series this weekend (9-10 October) culminating what has been a highly charged season of Olympic Classes racing.
The annual Series provides quality national racing opportunities for aspiring 2012 hopefuls, while continuing to offer top class racing and venues for all Olympic Classes sailors throughout the UK. Kicking off at August’s Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, this weekend’s final clash of the three-event Series, saw both seasoned campaigners and new faces up on the podium following some pretty perfect sunny and breezy conditions at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing venue.
The 49er class saw the biggest turnout of the weekend 2009 series champions, Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh, counting three race wins to take regatta honours. John Pink and Rick Peacock’s second place however was enough to earn them the national Series crown. Returning from injury which forced them to miss the first two events, Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith proved they are back on form picking up third from their weekend efforts.
